Tentative description: As Central America’s most geographically diverse country with unique environmental conditions across its terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, Guatemala is one of the most biodiverse yet disaster-prone areas in the world. Facing intertwined public health and environmental crises, such as infectious zoonotic disease outbreaks, food insecurity and malnutrition, water quality degradation, and air pollution, all threaten the health of humans, animals, and the environment. One Health provides a unifying framework for linking human, animal, and environmental systems, promoting more effective prevention, mitigation, and collaborative planning for these urgent global risks. Supported by the GEO Health Community of Practice and the Guatemala Ministries of Environment and Natural Resources and Public Health and Social Assistance, this plenary session will highlight how co-developing One Health solutions can address environmental health risks and promote ecosystem sustainability through interdisciplinary collaboration in policy and decision-making across the Americas.
